shop spotlight : Fancy That

hi everyone!
today i am writing about my first visit to Fancy That in Walpole, Massachusetts.

i booked my Afternoon Tea through email with Sarah, one of the owners. she and her husband Brad run the shop together! Sarah was very accommodating and polite in our correspondence. while they cannot provide a gluten-free or dairy-free meal, they can work with you on your allergies or sensitivities. i asked for a vegetarian menu for myself and it was easily honored. there is no concrete menu, instead, they create a personalized meal for each guest.

my setting
i arrived and was promptly greeted by Brad, who would take care of me for the entirety of my stay. Brad was a wonderful host and an incredibly well-spoken pleasant gentleman. he was very patient with me as i took my time exploring the shoppe and taking photos! Brad is very knowledgeable about the tea offerings, menu, and all items in the shoppe.

my table was right in the heart of the shoppe, overlooking one of the main windows in the front. this was a great spot for me, since i could watch all the happenings of the shoppe while glancing outside every once in awhile.

Fancy That's true charm lies in all the small, exquisite details - from each vintage tea cup used, to textiles placed at your table, to your silverware. it's just so perfectly cozy yet elegant at the same time.

for my tea, i opted for the Marie Antoinette from Nina's in Paris. it is described as "a very delicate tea, flavored with apples & rose, with a touch of strongness with ceylon tea basis Apple aroma done with apples coming exclusively from The King's Kitchen Garden ("Le Potager du Roi") of Versailles."

my tea paired well with my 3-tier tray of confections: an adorable heart-shaped pumpkin cranberry scone, apple cinnamon tea bread, 2 cucumber and chive onion cream cheese sandwiches on pumpernickel, 1 oven roasted red pepper hummus sandwich on wheat, 1 granny smith apple and vermont cheddar sandwich with a little cream cheese on raisin swirl, passionfruit with coconut macron (imported from France!), gingerbread cupcake, and a pumpkin cream cheese trifle.

it's so hard to choose favorites, but i really enjoyed the scone (perfectly flaky and light) and the trifle (super rich and tasty)!

what i really enjoyed about Fancy That, is that it is much more than a tearoom. in addition to their tea service, they offer rentals of vintage china, a varied and high quality gift shoppe and consignment. personally, the high level of customer service was really what set it apart from other tearooms. i have never felt more at home while enjoying afternoon tea.

Brad thought my outfit was very cute (and knew about lolita fashion!!), as did other patrons! i wasn't  bothered by anyone. in fact, the patrons who did talk to me about it thought it was a very cute style (including one who asked to take a photo of my outfit for me). i would absolutely feel comfortable wearing lolita here - either by myself or with a group. Brad actually asked to take my photo so Sarah could put it on Fancy That's Facebook page. i was rather flattered and happily obliged. i was really surprised when their Facebook followers liked it so much (some even to share it on their own walls!) as well as the sweet comments!

i was disappointed that Sarah was not on location on the day i stopped by - i was hoping to meet her and say thank you in person for helping me book a tea time. Brad explained that she is usually in the shop on Saturdays and Sundays, their busy days, while Brad is there Thursday through Sunday. i'm hoping i do get the chance to meet her in person the next time i stop in (: i also missed out on exploring the Pink Room, but hopefully this will also happen the next time i visit!

reservations were difficult to secure - if you are interested in booking i would highly recommend calling or emailing about 2-3 weeks in advance from the date you would be requesting. they are a very popular spot with limited space, so seats fill up quickly! the maximum amount of guests they can have in a shop is 20, so please keep this in mind if you are thinking about holding a meetup here. it seems that their less-busy days are Thursday and Friday, while their super-busy days are Saturday and Sunday (i went this past Friday).

please enjoy the rest of the photos i took! i hope it helps to capture the sweet ambiance of the shoppe <3

until next time!
